Jamie Otis has been keeping fans updated throughout her pregnancy. However, the celebrity’s latest reveal is one that she admits she’s having difficulty processing.

The Married at First Sight star revealed via social media on Wednesday that she tested positive for the human papillomavirus (HPV). Otis is currently 17 weeks pregnant with her second child, and though her pregnancy is still going smoothly, doctors informed her this could be an early sign of cancer. But she and her husband, Doug Hehner, will have to wait until she gives birth to confirm with the proper tests whether it is cancerous or not.

“I went to the doc and heard my pap was bad & I have HPV,” Otis told her Instagram followers. “Although it sounds like an STD and I should freak the F out, I know this is somewhat common and not to be overly worried about. I was scheduled to have a colposcopy just to take a better look at the skin cells in my vagina.” She continued, “Also, not really a big deal as long as the doc doesn’t see dysplasia … if she does then it could be a sign of early cancer.

However, the 33-year old went on to explain she has to wait until her baby arrives so they can confirm whether it’s cancer or not. “Buuut, I got the call today saying that my doc did see dysplasia & since I’m pregnant, we will have to wait to biopsy my cervix until after I have the baby,” Otis went on.

HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in North America. According to The Mayo Clinic, a dysplasia is an abnormal growth or development of cells within tissues or organs that are caused by HPV (for Otis, it’s affecting her cervix). Luckily, however, even severe cases are treatable. With mild dysplasia, for instance, no treatment is even needed.

The mom-of-one admitted her head has been “all over the place” since she got the frightening news, but she says s he’s trying to stay positive. “I just have to wait until after I have the baby to really know what’s going on inside me, but I’m just putting the positive vibes out there & praying & being so THANKFUL for my health,” she continued.

She also took the time to address other mothers who may be going through something similar: “I couldn’t help but think about all the women who are pregnant and find out super scary news like they actually do have cancer or a fatal disease and they’re left with the tough decision: treat yourself while pregnant to save your life but risk losing the baby OR take your chances and postpone treatment to save your baby.”
