Trigger: Death; Violence
Death in any sense of the word can be described as tragic. But to snuff out the life of a woman and her unborn child is unthinkable. Mariana Jurado was in her third trimester and more than eight months pregnant when she was brutally attacked by a knife-wielding stranger this past Tuesday morning. Jurado has been attempting to get to work when the incident took place.
After being brutally attacked, Jurado was able to give a description of the perpetrator to police while her injuries were being treated by first responders. Police were able to identify Garrett Scheff as the suspect. Although the mother-to-be was able to give a statement to authorities following the attack, she, unfortunately, passed away shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital. The Salina Police Department in California were immediately on Scheff's tail and captured him just a block away from where the attack occurred. Scheff was booked at the Monterrey County Adult Detention Center. It's unclear what motivated Scheff to attack Jurado.
The seemingly random act of violence is not Scheff's first run-in with the law, as his record stems backs to the '90s with a record a mile long. From 2005 to 2015, Scheff was cited in numerous court cases revolving mostly around traffic and minor offences. However, he was found not mentally competent to stand trial in 2015. Prior to that, Scheff has also been arrested in connection with a number of violent crimes, such as second-degree burglary, possession, obstructing of a law enforcement officer, evading a law enforcement officer, buying and receiving stolen property, vandalism, and grand theft.
Jurado's family is heartbroken over their loss. Her unborn child's godmother said to the media, “Mariana and my godchild did not deserve this [...] I love her very much and she will be deeply missed.” Even more heartfelt words were written in Jurado's obituary by her closest friends and family. Her California community has suffered a difficult loss in the wake of this unthinkable tragedy. The only solace to be found is the speedy capture of the suspect and hopefully an even hastier court prosecution.
