Sasha Pieterse is opening up on what it was like to give birth during the COVID-19 pandemic. The actress and her husband Hudson Sheaffer welcomed their first child, a baby boy, into the world on November 6th. Now, nearly two months after her son’s birth, Pieterse is revealing her birth story and how not everything went according to plan.

Pieterse and Sheaffer’s son Hendrix Wade Sheaffer was born on November 6 at 5:39 a.m. weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces. Hendrix made his grand entrance after his mom went through 27 hours of labor. Pieterse went into more detail about the more than day-long labor on her website, Sasha in Good Taste. The 24-year-old says she was 41 weeks pregnant and still no sign of her baby boy, so her doctor wanted to schedule an induction. Pieterse had a goal, though, of not being medically induced so her doctor performed a membrane sweep and 36 hours later at 2 a.m., her water broke. By the time she got to her birthing room, she was 5 cm. dilated. By hour 16, she had only progressed to 6 cm, so it was recommended to introduce Pitocin every 30 minutes at a low dose to give her a little push. After hour 24, Pieterse decided to have an epidural as she was focused on giving birth vaginally more than anything.

Through it all, though, Pieterse says the easiest part of her labor was pushing. Once she was at 10 cm, she had been in labor for 27 hours and 39 minutes. According to PEOPLE, a week after her baby boy’s arrival, she posted a photo of Hendrix, saying they are so in love with him. Even directly after his arrival, however, Pieterse admits she felt so many emotions. While she felt in awe of her tiny human and pure joy, she also felt sadness, frustration, and anger. She says she wishes she didn’t feel that way, but what didn’t help were nurses not being informed of her birth plan and going against her wish for not wiping off the vernix caseosa biofilm off Hendrix. Once Pieterse, Hudson, and Hendrix made it to the recovery room, the couple wept. Pieterse says she feels robbed of the birth she wanted. She felt rushed to give birth because she was told the risk of infection was higher after a labor passed 24 hours.

The actress says she is eternally grateful for everything that did go right. She feels thankful for having a healthy and happy baby boy, something she says is all she could “ever hope for.”
