Serena Williams Admits That It's "Painful" To Be Away From Her Daughter

Tennis star Serena Williams recently got candid and admitted that it's heart-wrenching to leave her little girl, Alexis Olympia, to hit the tennis courts.

In an interview with Forbes, she opens up about how painful it is to be away from her toddler. The tennis ace is currently competing in the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows, New York, and she has revealed that her toddler, Alexis Olympia - who turns two on Sunday - gets 'upset' when she has to leave for work and admitted her "heart literally aches" when she can't be with her.

The 37-year-old sports star shares her toddler with her Internet entrepreneur husband Alexis Ohanian, 36., who is the co-founder and executive chairman of the social news website Reddit. Serena and Alexis tied the knot on November 16, 2017, in a fairy-tale wedding, two months after welcoming their baby girl into the world. On Friday, Williams told Forbes that she actually prefers playing during the day because then, she gets to go home and see her baby.

Williams said: "I’ve been missing her the last few nights when I play. In the beginning she would really be upset when I left. And now she’s a little bit better."

While it's definitely hard not always being there for her daughter, she said it's "good for her" to be able to work. She added: "Sometimes my heart literally aches when I’m not around her."

'But, you know, it’s good for me, I guess, to keep working and just — to all moms out there that it’s not easy. It’s really kind of painful sometimes. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.'

Serena previously admitted she doesn't know how she juggles running her fashion business with her tennis career, training and her responsibilities as a mother. She previously told Teen Vogue that every night she goes to bed amazed at herself for having gone through the day.

She added: "I'm sure a lot of people out there can relate, right? It's like, this day is over, it's 10 o'clock, I got through it. How did that happen? That's kind of how I am. I just take it as it is and realize that everyone goes through the same thing."

Williams has been slowly making her way into the game of pro-tennis and competition since giving birth to Alexis in September 2017.
