Serena Williams has opened up about planning Meghan Markle's New York baby shower.

In an interview with Business of Fashion conducted shortly after the event, Williams said she put a lot of pressure on herself to put together a memorable event.

“Planning something like that takes a lot of effort,” says Williams. “I’m a perfectionist, so I’m like, ‘Let’s make it perfect.'”

From the looks of it, that's exactly what happened. According to reports, the event was a more intimate affair, and Williams made sure to invite some of Markles closest friends like Amal Clooney, journalist Gayle King, and Misha Nonoo. With that in mind, the shower included a performance from, Erin Hill, a renowned harp player, while guests put together flower arrangements which were donated to charity. To top it off, the party favors were adorable. Markle's friend and makeup artist shared a photo of cookies, prepared by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, each guest received. Shaped as a stork, rattle, and bonnet the colors were kept neutral.

With all that in mind, Markle didn't open her gifts at the shower. Instead, she waited until she could return home with Prince Harry to open her gifts.

While those who don't follow the royal family too closely might be surprised to read tennis legend Serena Williams planned Meghan Markle's baby shower, but the two have been good friends for years after meeting each other at a charity event. Williams and husband Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, even attended the Royal wedding together.

Still, baby showers are considered a more American tradition, so it's a little strange for a royal to partake in one. According to 9Honey's Royal Commentator Victoria Arbiter, the reason is threefold. The first is because, as previously mentioned, baby showers are American, the second, however, is because royals need to keep their position of privilege in mind. Also, it's customary for parents in the UK to keep the gender of the baby unknown until birth.  Still, Markle is American by birth, and she can't stop her friends from wanting her to have a typically American pregnancy, so it's not surprising that she broke tradition here.

While it's unclear when her exact due date is, it's expected to be coming up soon. But don't expect to see the newest royal immediately after, as Markle and Harry have decided to keep their baby out of the public eye until they've celebrated privately.
