Serena Williams wins first match in official return to tennis after giving birth 6-months ago!
Serena Williams is back and doing what she does best: killing the tennis game. Williams made her triumphant return to the Women’s Tennis Association Tour on Thursday, March 8, 2018, winning her first set in her comeback after a 14-month break for the birth of her first child.
Williams has been slowly making her way into the game of pro-tennis and competition in the months since giving birth to a daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. last September 2017. Serena and hubby Alexis Ohanian tied the knot on November 16, 2017, in a fairy-tale wedding, only two months after welcoming their newborn baby girl to the world.
Williams has loved her journey into motherhood, but has been ready to return to the tennis court for some time now and that time is finally here. The tennis Grand Slam champion had her first singles match at the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open in California on Thursday. She played against Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan, winning the game 7 – 5, 6 – 3 in the first round, as reported by ESPN.
Williams couldn’t contain her excitement after winning her first game since birthing daughter Alexis, describing the experience to the Associated Press as “incredible,” she said after the 1-½ hour match.
The tennis star continued by saying, “It’s been over a year and a kid later and I get to go home to her now, and I’m excited about that… It definitely wasn’t easy. We always have a couple tight sets. It was good. I’m a little rusty, but it doesn’t matter. I’m just out here on this journey and doing the best I can.” It seems to be working in her favor!
Her family cheered the 36-year-old on in the stands including mother Oracene, sisters Lyndrea, Isha, and Venus, according to The Associated Press. If that wasn’t incentive enough to win, her hubby bought out four billboards in Palm Springs in tribute to Williams all featuring daughter Olympia with the phrase “G.M.O.A.T” - standing for “Greatest Mother Of All Time.”
Williams was ecstatic regarding her win and the support she received from her family and fans, saying, “Thank you guys for coming out.” This is only the start of Serena Williams' return, and we’re certain she’ll bounce back even more before you know it!
