There are probably very few people in this world that will tell you that they don’t like shopping at Target. For many people, it’s not just a big shiny retail store. It’s an experience. The bright lights, the red bullseye in the front and the harmonious feeling of walking down aisle after aisle for new decorating or style ideas. Simply put, Target truly is a home away from home for many people.
But with that said, there are certain things that you shouldn’t buy while you're at Target. For one, there are cheaper prices elsewhere and two, the little things add up, don’t they? Here’s what you need to know.
Everyone loves to start their day off with a hot cup of coffee. And just about everyone loves to start off their Target shopping trip with an ice-cold Caramel Macchiato, too. But let’s be honest here for a moment. You came to Target to save money.
Do you really want to start off your trip by paying for an overpriced cup of iced coffee, a few snacks, and a hot dog, popcorn or Frappuccino for your tot? Probably not. More often than not you’ll end up spending more money at the Starbucks than you do at the Target cash register.
Everyone loves the styles at Target but sometimes it’s not a good idea to go for the bargains. The clothes are cute but the quality doesn’t last forever. Plus, there’s a very good chance that if you are buying something on clearance, someone might have purchased that item before you. Does that make it worth the discounted price? Not always.
As the Cheat Sheet puts it, “It’s great to get a good deal, but you have to make sure you pay attention to what you’re buying. A user on Reddit, who goes by the name livmoore, said marked-down clothing is sometimes used and put back on the rack.”
If there’s one thing that everyone wants to save money on, it’s their medication. Especially if you have a big family. The costs certainly add up and unfortunately, you won’t find the best deals at Target.
More often than not, the pharmacy is packed with people anyway or they are unable to fulfill your needs right away. Plus they aren’t competitive with prices. The Cheat Sheet says, “Save your money when it comes to medication. You can get a better deal at bulk-shopping store Costco. After Target’s pharmacy was taken over by CVS, many deals on medications were suspended.”
When it comes to certain items like books, you are almost always better off buying them online. Plus, a lot of Target shoppers will agree that the department store’s book section doesn’t always have a great selection and that the prices (even when on sale) aren’t competitive at all.
Either get your good reads on Amazon or stick with the library if you truly want to save money. The Cheat Sheet says, “You can get better deals on books from Amazon, especially if you’re an Amazon Prime member. In addition, you can get e-books from Amazon, which Target doesn’t offer.”
We have to give credit where credit is due: the electronics department always looks so inviting at Target stores. They are big, they are bright and they make it fun to browse through. But truth be told, you won’t be saving your money or getting good deals there.
Target is known for a lot of things, but electronics is not one of them. The Cheat Sheet says, “It also tends to carry mostly lesser-known brands. Unless you’re planning to make an electronics purchase during the blowout holiday sales, you’re better off searching for deals at Best Buy, which offers lower prices and name brands.”
Target has a great selection of toiletries and many household items that you need or use every day. But truth be told, they don’t come at the best prices. If you truly want to save money on everyday things like shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper and cleaning products, head over to your local wholesale department store like Costco or Sam’s Club location instead.
You won’t only save a ton of money, but you will also have enough stocked up that you won’t need to shop for weeks or months to come. Now that’s what you call shopping with convenience in mind, right?
Again, Target has done a great job of revving up their grocery section and making their fruits and veggies look beautiful on display. But truth be told, you are better off getting your greens elsewhere as the quality of some of the fruits and veggies aren’t on par with other grocery stores.
As a matter of fact, if you want to get the best value for your money, check out your local fresh or community market or better yet, grow your own in the convenience of your backyard. Nothing says organic more than having your own vegetable garden at home.
While there’s no doubt that Target has a pretty big selection of different brand-named bread (including their own store brand), their prices aren’t as competitive as one would think. As a matter of fact, you’ll find yourself saving money on bread by going elsewhere.
Sure, it might be organic, but do you really want to pay $6 a loaf for it? The Krazy Koupon Lady says, “Dollar Tree sells Oroweat bread, and it’s the lowest price you’ll find on that brand. Throw it in the freezer, or use it right away, though. Bread at Dollar Tree isn’t expired, but it’s closer to expiration than bread at Target.”
Let’s be honest here. How many times have you checked something out at a store that might have looked cute on display, bought it, brought it home and then realized that it doesn’t look as cute in your living room?
Target furniture is great, but for the quality, it’s just not worth the cost. You are better off going elsewhere. The Krazy Koupon Lady points out, “Guys, Big Lots. Unless you’ve been inside a Big Lots, you may not believe me when I say they have great furniture and lovely prices. Target furniture is cute, but not for double the cost!”
As cute as some of those dollar section toys and nick-knacks are, let’s face it: most of it is stuff that you don’t need. And if you end up buying little toys or gifts for your kids there’s a very good chance that they will forget about it by the time you reach the check-out counter.
Even though you might think you are getting a deal, buying multiple packs of $1 socks and other things that are going to end up being thrown around the house just simply aren’t worth it. Save your money and skip this section instead.
