For many parents juggling multiple childcare expenditures, buying a new car seat can be a luxury they cannot afford. Luckily, Target will bring back their successful car seat trade-in program from Tuesday, September 3 to Friday, September 13.

Simply drop off your old car seat in the recycling bin by Guest Services and a Target team member will give you a coupon for 20% off a new car seat, booster seat, car seat base, travel system or stroller. The coupon can also be used for certain baby accessories, like high chairs, swings, rockers and bouncers.

The coupon is valid through Saturday, September 14, 2019, so if you don't manage to find the seat you’re looking for when you bring in your old one, you can always use the coupon online or another day. Check to see which Target stores in your area are participating in the trade-in program here.

Target has held car seat trade-ins since 2016. The program allows parents to easily recycle old seats since most cannot be recycled curbside. The old car seats are delivered to Waste Management, which uses the recycled material to make items like grocery carts, plastic buckets and construction materials such as steel beams.

According to the retailer, Target accepts and recycles all types of car seats, including infant seats, convertible seats, car seat bases, harness or booster car seats, and car seats that are expired or damaged. So far, the company has recycled more than 7.4 million pounds of materials, which adds up to a total of half a million car seats since the trade-in program started, which is great news for parents and the planet.

According to WeHateToWaste.com, which educates consumers on recycling, twelve million child car seats are sold each year in US and most are not recycled, rather they just end up in landfills. This is another great reason to participate in the Target program. Whether you end up using the coupon yourself, giving it to a friend or relative, or simply use the opportunity to recycle an old car seat, the Target program will help you get rid of your used car seat, while making a difference.
