It is Ok to admit that moms are all a little bit obsessed with celebrities. They are just so interesting. I, for one, try not to be. I try to remember that they are normal people just like us—but I can’t help but click on stories featuring my favorite actresses or my musical idols. I want to know more. And now that I a mother myself, I am fascinated by these women and their children.
So many of these celebs that we are accustomed to seeing on the daily are mothers. Some of them have had their babies in the spotlight so we are familiar with their progenies. Some had their children before they were famous, or have kept their pregnancies on the down-low so we forget that they are even mothers to begin with.
It is super fascinating when you take a moment to realize the ages that these popular celebs became mothers. Some were so much older than I had realized and some were just babies themselves.
Don’t worry—we have taken care of the leg work for you. Sit back, relax, and peruse this list of your favorite celebs and the story behind their journey in to motherhood.
15 Adele - 24
Adele came into the spotlight with gusto. Her beautiful, booming voice swooned fans and made her career magnificent. When she announced to her fans that was pregnant in 2012, people were beside themselves. Adele—having a baby?
At 24-years-old, Adele gave birth to her son, Angelo James Konecki. Although fans hoped that she would soon add another child to her family, Adele has called that unlikely. She told Today, "I’m too scared," she said. "I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and it frightened me.”
You have to give Adele credit for not only being brutally honest but for also shedding light on the taboo subject of postpartum depression. Fans love her because she is an incredible musician, but also because she is so relatable for women everywhere.
14 Reese Witherspoon - 22
Reese is always talking about her children and posting pictures, so the fact that she is a mother shouldn’t come as a surprise. Her two children are gorgeous and look just like their parents. But do you know how young Reese was when she had her kids?
Shockingly Reese Witherspoon managed to not only have a thriving career but also to have a baby by the time she was 22-years-old. After meeting her then-husband Ryan Phillippe on the set of “Cruel Intentions”, the two fell in love and married shortly after. They have two children together; Ava Elizabeth and Deacon Reese.
When I was 22 I slept until 11am and ate Mexican food for every meal. I was still in college and no career. Props, Reese. You have once again proved that you are amazing.
13 Sophia Vergara - 19
Most of us did not know who Sophia Vergara was until she got the role as Gloria on the hit show “Modern Family”. But before her life as a famous actress, Sophia was married to her high school sweetheart. Together, they had a son, Manolo, when Sophia was just 19-years old.
Sophia has said that although being a young mother was tough, she was lucky that she had the energy of a young person. Girl, I feel you on that one. Every year that goes by I wonder how I would possibly have the energy to have a baby again.
At least Manolo had the chance to grow up out of the spot light. Many children of celebrities feel like they get shoved into the limelight too young and that it comes with a cost.
12 Hilary Duff - 24
Hilary Duff became famous during her role on the hit Disney show “Even Stevens”. We watched her grow up into an adult and break off to star in movies and pursue her musical career. But I didn’t realize that in the midst of all of this—Hilary became a mother pretty young!
Hilary and her then-husband, hockey player Mike Comrie, welcomed a son in March of 2012 when Hilary were a mere 24-years=old. Her son, Luca, is an only child but Hilary has told media outlets that she was glad she had him young because it gives her more time to add siblings to the mix.
Who knows who Hilary will end up with, but I can pretty much guarantee that if she has any more children, they will be just as cute as Luca.
11 Jamie Lynn Spears - 16
Britney Spears’ plucky little sister, Jamie Lynn was living in the shadow of her famous older sister—which was probably not easy. And in the midst of all of it—Jamie Lynn found out that she was pregnant.
At only 16-years-old, Jamie Lynn gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Maddie. It is never easy to have a baby. But to have one when you are that young can be brutal. This was before the days of “Teen Mom”, which helped shed light on teen pregnancy. This happened during when being the star of Nickelodeon TV show and being a mother were not conducive.
But Jamie Lynn persisted. From all accounts she blossomed into a really good mom. Her career may have taken a hit but she still has plenty of time…
10 Niki Taylor - 19
Niki Taylor is a well-known American model. She is known for being one of the youngest women to be featured on the cover of Vogue. One of the youngest women to be on People’s “Most Beautiful People”. But she accomplished something else during her teenaged years—she also became a mother.
Niki gave birth to her twins, Jake and Hunter, at 19-years-old. That in itself is a miracle—how she managed to have a successful career at the same time—that is just crazy.
I can barely cook dinner and find the time to call back my mother. And Niki Taylor somehow accomplished feats in both motherhood and business. And when your business depends on how you physically look, and you’ve just had twins, that is a lot of pressure.
9 Kate Hudson - 24
The beautiful Kate Hudson already had a successful career in acting by her 24th birthday. But she was also a mother! Kate and her then-husband Chris Robinson (lead singer of a little band called Black Crowe) welcomed a baby boy, Ryder, into their young family.
Katie told People that she never felt like a “young” mom until Ryder reached middle school, where she began to notice that she was years younger than everyone else. I am guessing that when you get famous young, age doesn’t hold the same markers as it does for “normal” people. You don’t necessarily graduate high school with everyone, or even college. Your age is marked by career highlights rather than personal milestones.
Kate had a second child, Bingham, with Muse singer Matt Bellamy in 2011.
8 Solange Knowles - 19
Solange Knowles is talented and beautiful in her own right—but she is a little over-shadowed by mega star sister, Beyoncé. Most of recognize her from her signature hair and her paparazzi photos but one thing that many people might not know is that Solange is a mother.
Solange had her son Daniel Smith Jr. when she was only 18-years-old, in the fall of 2004. The young mother has said that having a child that young was tough, but she gives her son a lot of credit, calling him the “coolest kid”. He is now 13 years-old and has managed to keep himself out of the spot light.
Solange’s sister, Beyoncé, added to the brood eight years later when she had Blue Ivy Carter, in 2012 and twins Rumi and Sir Carter in 2017.
7 Brandy - 23
I was a young teenager in the 1990’s so I am very familiar with Brandy. If you are too young to remember, she had a ton of hit singles including “The Boy Is Mine” and “Never S-a-y Never”. She also starred in her own TV show. But I had no idea that she had a child—and that her birth was recorded for a reality special!
In 2002, Brandy had her daughter, Sy'rai Iman Smith. She was only 23-years-old. MTV was there to capture the birth in all of its glory, in a special titled, “Brandy: Special Delivery”. We haven’t seen or heard a lot from Brandy in recent years, but one can assume she’s probably busy with all of the hustle and bustle that comes from being a mother.
6 Ashlee Simpson Ross - 23
Ashlee Simpson is the younger sister of the loveable Jessica Simpson. Ashlee made a name for herself in music with her hit single, “Pieces of Me” but lost a lot of ground when she was caught lip syncing (very, very poorly) when she performed live on SNL.
Ashlee moved forward with her young life and fell in love with Pete Wentz, lead singer of Fall Out Boy. She shocked fans when announced her pregnancy and had her son, Bronx, at 23. Since then Ashlee met and married Evan Ross, son of the famous Diana Ross. The two have one daughter together, Jagger Snow, who was born in the summer of 2015.
Young motherhood seems to suit Ashlee well, and her adorable family looks very happy together. I wonder what she will do next…
5 Gwen Stephani - 44
Everyone’s favorite punk rock girl, Gwen, is not only a talented musician but a mother of three. She may look like she is still her in 20’s but Gwen is actually 48- years-old.
Gwen and then-husband Gavin Rossdale had two boys already, when she found out when was pregnant with a third-- at 44. Gwen told InStyle magazine, "I was trying at the time to do more music with No Doubt. Then I got pregnant, and I was like, 'OK, well what am I going to do now? I need to make some changes. There is only so much energy."
As with everything she’s done in life, Gwen tackled motherhood with energy. Having three kids hasn’t slowed down her musical career or her role as one of the judges on the hit show “The Voice”.
4 Tina Fey - 41
My idol (ahem, I mean the actress) Tina Fey has had an illustrious career. She has been on SNL, starred in countless movies, written books and movies, won two Golden Globes, is best friends with Amy Poehler in real life.
Due to her successful career she didn’t settle down and have kids until later in life. Her first child, Alice, was born in 2005. Her second, Penelope, was born in 2011 when Tina was 41.
Tina told Parents, "The ideal situation for a parent is one that no one has—having a fulfilling job that requires you to work three days a week. It's better for the parents, because they get to spend time with the children and also have a source of pride and achievement—and income—outside the home."
3 Rachel Zoe - 42
Rachel Zoe has made a name for herself a fashion designer. She has worked with many famous people and became so good at her job that she became famous, as well. Her hit show “The Rachel Zoe Project” was a hit for many Bravo viewers, and documented her fashionable life as well as the birth of her first child, Skyler, in 2011.
Her second child, Kaius was born in 2013 when Rachel was 42-years-old. But the fashionista did not seem at all deterred by her late-in-life motherhood. If anything, she just kept chugging, full steam ahead.
Rachel showed many fans and proved to the world at large that a woman can really have everything. Whenever she wants to.
You go, girl. Now get your show back on the air because I miss your fashion tips.
2 Halle Berry - 47
I cannot believe that Halle Berry is 51-years-old. All I can do is hope and pray that I look half as ravaging as her does when I get to be her age. (Or any age, really.)
But back to the point—Halle Berry had her first child, daughter Nahla, when she was 41-years-old—which is ancient in Hollywood years. She then had a second child—a son, Maceo, when she was 47! If anything, Halle just proves that age is just a number.
When speaking of daughter Nahla, Berry said “When you have children you get to see things all over again. So I’ve never laughed as hard, I’ve never done more silly things, and I go to great lengths to make her laugh. She’s awakened a childlike side of me.”
1 Kelly Preston - 48
Actress Kelly Preston and her famous husband, John Travolta, suffered a great tragedy in the death of their son, Jett, who passed away in 2009. He is survived by his sister, Ella Beal. No one expected the couple, who were in their late 40’s, to try again.
But in 2010, at the age of 48, Kelly became pregnant. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Benjamin.
Kelly told Health magazine, "When I found out I was pregnant, I was floored," she said. "I'd snuck out of bed and then came back and woke Johnny up in bed. We both started crying. It was wonderful."
It’s nice to see that so much joy can come after such a horrific life event. It should give all of us a sense of hope.
