The rumors are true: the iconic toy store, Toys "R" Us, is making a comeback in the United States. After filing for bankruptcy back in 2017, Toys "R" Us has finally found their footing and is gearing up for a new reveal this month.
Formerly known for their massive warehouse-like stores, Toys "R" Us had everything a kid could ever want. They even have Babies "R" Us stores to make it easier for parents to prepare for their newborn or toddler.
Now that they're bouncing back from hard financial times, Toys "R" Us will be coming back but in a new and modern way. Here's everything we know about their comeback.
10 THEY TEAMED UP WITH TARGET
If there's one superstore that can help Toys "R" Us find their footing in their re-launch, it's Target. Considering Toys "R" Us aims towards parents and their children, Target is the perfect partner.
According to Sify, for the time being, when North American shoppers head over to the Toys "R" Us website, they'll be directed to checkout via Target.
9 THERE WILL BE TWO 'EXPERIMENTAL' STORES
While there used to be 735 Toys "R" Us stores across the US, that's not their goal for their new launch. Instead, there will only be two experimental stores in Texas and New Jersey. Tru Kids (the parent company to Toys "R" Us) noted Toys "R" Us's strategy will be different than years prior with fewer—smaller—stores and a whole new look.
8 BUT KEEP AN EYE ON 10 MORE LOCATIONS POPPING UP
By the end of 2020, Toys "R" Us is looking to open eight more locations around the US. They'll be similar to their two experimental stores but updating the experience as reviews of their experiment stores come in.
There's no word yet on where the next to stores will pop up but if you're in New Jersey you can check out the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus and The Galleria in Houston, Texas.
7 TOYS "R" US IS UP AND RUNNING JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Surprise! Toys "R" Us's new launch is gearing up to open by the end of this month. While this may seem like a surprise to OG Toys "R" Us fans, it's all calculated to be up and running just in time for the holiday season.
If you aren't in Texas or New Jersey to check out their experimental stores, shopping online is the next best thing until Toys "R" Us expands physically next year (see more below). So what are you waiting for, parents? It's time to get holiday shopping!
6 THE NEW TOYS "R" US WILL BE A SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
If you can remember, the old Toys "R" Us stores were massive. Shoppers could easily spend the entire day there. Easily organized into toy sections, shoppers knew where to go if they were looking for Babies, bikes, games, and anything else their child desired. There was so much to look at it was almost overwhelming. However, the new Toys "R" Us will be very different.
According to BCK Online, their new stores will be more "interactive." Kids and parents won't just be shopping for toys. It'll be a "wonderland" for shoppers – a place that's more than just a toy store.
5 AND THEY'LL BE SMALLER THAN BEFORE
There's a reason the new Toys "R" Us is aiming to be smaller than their former stores. According to the Washington Post, instead of having 50+ rows of toy shelves, there will be more areas for kids to play.
There will be innovative digital displays, areas for kids to let loose and learn (while their parents' shop), and space for kids to have their birthday parties! While it may be hard to envision now, there are too many fans of Toys "R" Us for this not to work. What kid wouldn't want to have their birthday at Toys "R" Us?
4 GEOFFREY THE GIRAFFE IS STILL THEIR MASCOT
Kids got so excited when they saw Toys "R" Us's mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe. As an animated giraffe, kids knew what they were going to get from him. They knew Geoffrey the Giraffe equated to aisles and aisles of toys. And although Toys "R" Us is undergoing some major changes, Geoffrey the Giraffe isn't going anywhere, so get used to seeing this adorable long-necked character being around.
3 THEY'RE HIRING FORMER TOY "R" US EMPLOYEES
After Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy back in 2017 over 700 stores, thousands of employees lost their jobs. No matter what the company is, it's always upsetting when you need to let go of your employees and they need to start fresh and find new jobs.
In a beautiful turn of events, Toys "R" Us's new launch means more jobs and they're looking to hire former Toys "R" Us employees for their new stores. Hiring former employees is giving back to those who gave to them and it means they're familiar with the store's code of conduct.
2 THEY TEAMED UP WITH B8TA
Along with Target, Toys "R" Us has teamed up with B8ta; a digital company that'll be responsible for their new interactive aspects of the store. Focusing on technology, they'll bring Toys "R" Us's tech-driven mission to life. With the help of B8ta, Toys "R" Us will be more of an experience rather than a shopping errand for kids.
1 TOYS "R" US IS STILL GOING STRONG IN EUROPE DESPITE THE US'S BANKRUPTCY DEBACLE
Before Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy and shut down hundreds of stores across the United States, shoppers knew the stores were going downhill with the increased usage of eCommerce. However, putting North American stores aside, Toys "R" Us is still very much alive and running in Europe. In fact, Editon claims they still have hundreds of stores across "Europe, Asia, and India" and plan on opening even more in Asia!
