Trigger warning: This story contains and links to information about the topic of abortion.
One college student says she was kicked out of an Uber after her driver discovered she was going to an abortion clinic.
An anonymous Reddit user shared her experience on the social media platform, revealing she relies on services like Lyft and Uber to get around because she does not have access to a car. So, when she discovered she was pregnant, she hailed an Uber to take her to a clinic.
"After about five minutes in the car, he asked, 'are we going to planned parenthood?' I said no (because we weren’t), but it set off alarm bells that he would even ask that," writes the Redditor in a post we edited for grammatical purposes. "The destination I put in was just the name of the doctor and the address of the clinic, there was nothing that would suggest it was an abortion clinic. After a few more minutes he asked, 'are we going to an abortion clinic?'"
She says she didn't give him an answer since Uber drivers don't need to know information like that. Still, the motorist persisted and shared a story about his wife's experience — he concluded the story by telling her it's a decision she'd regret for the rest of her life. Then, he pulled over and told her he would either drive her back to her city or she'd have to find her own way to her destination. Feeling unsafe with the driver, she decided to find another means of transportation. The cabbie waited for about 10 to 15 minutes while she tried to contact someone, but her parents didn't answer and she was too far out to request another Uber.
Eventually, she got ahold of her boyfriend who called her a cab. The whole ordeal made her an hour late for her appointment. Frustrated, she reached out to Uber and complained, and she received some strange details regarding the drive. Apparently, this was a driver with a very good record — still, they immediately fired him upon hearing the story. The second was that the driver took a route that was not the most efficient, leading to some speculation that he may have planned to make her trip difficult.
Speaking with CafeMom, the Redditor reiterated her story, saying while some may be championing the driver, he never knew where she was going.
"I never once confirmed to him I was having an abortion...I said nothing to him. He assumed that I was, based on my destination, and acted accordingly," she says. "That’s the shocking part to – that this man had the audacity to strand me based on an unconfirmed assumption."
The Reddit post where she initially shared her story has a disabled comment section now because of the unruly discourse. Yet, before that happened some did offer advice. Unfortunately for her, some legal action could be taken if Uber didn't want to cover her cab fees, but in the grand scheme of things, there wasn't much she could do.
