(UPDATE) Research Finds That Viagra May Be Effective In Minimizing Fetal Distress

UPDATE: A pregnancy trial which used Viagra to aid developing babies in the Netherlands has been stopped because 11 babies have passed away. Others were born prematurely and are now experiencing serious complications.

Viagra may be useful in helping minimize fetal distress during labor. Yes, the pill used by men to help erectile dysfunction can be used in another helpful manner.

The use of Viagra to help fetal distress is still in the testing phase, but according to a few studies, it has been successful thus far. One trial took place at Mater Mothers' Hospital in Australia, and the results were very encouraging. The women who participated in the trial were given sildenafil (the brand-neutral term for Viagra) during the early stages of labor.

Even though the Australian trial is in the early stages to date, the hospital has seen a 50% reduction in emergency C-sections or forceps having to be used during labor in cases in which the drug was administered. The trail was initially started with a theory stating that the drug would increase blood flow to the fetus as well as the placenta during labor. Increased blood flow would provide oxygen and nutrients to both the baby and the placenta, which would help ensure a safe delivery.

It is apparent that Viagra can help babies in distress during labor, but is this drug safe for laboring moms to use? Although it has not been proven that the drug is harmful to women, the side effects it can cause are just as concerning for females as they are for males. There is also a concern that the drug may have some lasting effects on the baby, but the doctors in the trial believe that those chances are small.

Along with helping with fetal distress, sildenafil research has shown that it could decrease the fetus' chances of developing cerebral palsy due to a lack of oxygen. Although the number of cases where cerebral palsy occurs due to oxygen deprivation is small, Viagra can further lower those odds.

The same goes for stillborn babies. Again, there is not a large number of stillborn births resulting from a lack of oxygen, but that amount could be even lower.

Viagra is really being used during labor, and the results of the trials that have taken place to date are very promising. There is still research to be done, but it has proven to be useful when it comes to minimizing fetal distress.
