20 Things You Didn't Know About The Barbie Doll

Everyone loves Barbie. She’s one of the most-popular and best-selling toys ever created. Barbie has been a household name since being introduced to the world back in 1959. After her debut, 351,000 Barbies were sold that year. Pretty amazing, right? But how much do you really know about this iconic doll?

Her popularity didn’t die down after she hit store shelves, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if you owned more than a few Barbie dolls when you were a kid. These days, a Barbie will cost you close to $20, but when she first debuted, she sold for just $3. Her price has come a long way since then, and collector’s editions of Barbie dolls can sell for up to $5,000. The most expensive Barbie ever sold was created by a jewelry designer named Stefano Canturi. His doll, which was draped in a beautiful diamond necklace and a ring, sold at an auction for $302,000.

The doll’s popularity had a lot to do with her ever-changing careers. For every child, there was a Barbie that would align with the kid’s career goals. From a doctor, to an astronaut, it seemed like there was nothing Barbie couldn’t do. She even went to space camp twice in a partnership with Mattel and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. But despite all of her careers, Barbie has always had her heart set on being the President of the United States. She has ran as a Presidential Candidate six times since 1992.

The first Barbie dolls were manufactured in Japan, and they wore clothing that was hand-stitched. As her popularity increased, she received attention from top fashion houses all over the world, and she is definitely a fan of luxury clothing. Big name fashion designers have designed clothes exclusively for the doll; including Gucci, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana and Givenchy. And if you thought you were a shoe lover, you don’t come close to Barbie’s footwear collection. The doll has had over a billion pairs of shoes designed just for her.

Besides clothing, there’s one other thing Barbie truly loves, and that’s animals. She has had over 40 pets; including a panda, a giraffe, a horse, a parrot and over 20 dogs. Her first pet to be introduced to the world was a horse by the name of Dancer. The horse was sold on a stand to allow it to rock back and forth, and it even had its own saddle and stirrups.

Barbie’s popularity has surpassed being the favorite doll amongst children all over the world. Even adults are obsessed with her. There’s even a Barbie Cafe which opened up in Taipei, Taiwan in 2013. The decor is all-pink with glitter accents, of course, and a few of the items on the menu include salad and strawberry mousse.

Barbie keeps her personal life a secret, but we do know that her real name is Barbara Millicent Roberts. She also comes from a pretty big family, and she has 7 siblings in total; including Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea, Krissy, Kelly, Tutti, and Todd. Her boyfriend, Ken, was named after the son of Mattel’s founders. Sadly, the real Ken passed away in 1994 at the age of 50.

When it comes to her relationship with Ken, it hasn’t been so perfect throughout the years. The couple announced their breakup back in 2004, but they kissed a made up after reuniting on the set of “Toy Story 3.” On Valentine’s Day 2013, Barbie officially changed her Facebook status from “single” to “in a relationship.”
