Viral Image Of Milk Ducts Is Not Completely Accurate

If you haven't already seen it, a photo depicting the female muscular system as well as milk ducts has had the internet in both awe and disgust. The woman who shared the photo on Twitter, "Artist formerly known as Byeonce", captioned it as, "I just realized I never saw a photo of a female muscular system. This is NOT what I imagined milk ducts to look like". Subsequently, the post, which is now being talked about by hundreds of thousands of people, has been seen by experts who say the image isn't completely inaccurate but that it gives viewers the wrong impression in how it is represented.

As quoted by USAToday, Eric Rodriguez, who is the managing editor of InnerBody says, "Lobes are not muscle, and that's probably my biggest gripe with [the] photo. Most organs, when you depict them, tend to be red because it's the color of blood, but when you put it together like this it looks like we have these flower muscles on our breasts and that's not the case." USAToday continues to report that Rodriquez says that "the reason the image surprises most people is because of how perfectly symmetrical the lobes are, which wouldn't be the case if they were pictured normally inside the breast".

When you think about it, Rodriguez's comment on the photo only makes sense because most, if not all, women have asymmetrical breasts (some more than others). Logically, our mammary system would, therefore, be asymmetrical as well. Milk ducts, also known as lactiferous ducts, become enlarged when a woman is about to give birth or breastfeeding. Normally, milk ducts are much smaller than shown in the picture and are also surrounded by other tissue.

Critics of the photo say that although partially true, the image gives viewers the idea that milk ducts are part of the muscular system, which definitely isn't the case. Regardless, the photo does give an idea as to how amazing our bodies really are in terms of creating nourishment that can sustain other life. Although slightly frightening to look at, the entire system is quite interesting to learn about and the image has definitely gotten people's attention to the mystery and beauty that is lactation.
