Not all parents of small children are fortunate to have family that lives nearby to babysit their kids when they need to be out without being able to take their kids along. Or, some are even less fortunate to have family that lives nearby that do not offer to help them. Additionally, not all parents of little children have trustworthy friends who would be willing to babysit either.
That means many of these parents end up having to hire babysitters. Because budgets are tight for many families, they would prefer to hire a responsible and trustworthy teenager to watch their kids for a lower price. That is because many babysitting agencies can be costly. Most parents would be willing to spend the extra money to have a high-quality babysitter that had a thorough background check to watch their kids at a time they needed to be out. However, that really is not doable for a lot of families.
That means these individuals really have no option than to hire a teenager or a young adult to watch their kids that they felt was trustworthy. And, unfortunately, many of these individuals regret making their commitments to babysit. These individuals end up finding incredible excuses as well to give to parents in order to back out of their plans. Here are 20 ridiculous excuses that were given by people that wanted to back out of their babysitting commitments.
20 Have To Advance Education
Anyone can put their original long-term plans on hold in order to go back to school so they can advance their education. Let me repeat this, anyone can put their long-term plans on the back burner if they prefer to go back to school so they can keep expanding their knowledge base.
However, when it comes to canceling babysitting commitments, the excuse to get out of it should be more believable than wanting to advance education. However, one of the answers on Yahoo! Answers to a question which had asked about the best excuses given to get out of babysitting commitments was someone saying that they were planning to advance their education. That cannot be done in one day or one evening so that is not a believable excuse.
19 The Swine Flu
Any parent would not want to have a sick babysitter watching their kids, because it is better to cancel plans due to the babysitter genuinely not being able to watch your kids due to coming down with a sickness. No one wants those germs in the house. However, how many babysitters that use this excuse to cancel their babysitting commitments are actually sick?
The one who answered the question on Yahoo! Answers about a ridiculous excuse given for getting out of babysitting commitments stated that she said she came down with the swine flu. This would not seem so silly if there were no local outbreaks of the swine flu, but this apparently happened at a time in the middle of summer while there were no swine flu outbreaks. That in itself is silly but clever!
18 Aunt Flo Is Coming
Anticipating the arrival of Aunt Flo is no walk in the park but what are the odds of you being doubled over in pain from those cramps on the night that you had agreed to babysit? Likely slim, however, when someone had asked the question on Reddit about the silliest excuses given to get out of babysitting a while back, this was one of the answers that were given.
Even so, if you were really having a rough time with it on the night that you had agreed to babysit and you legitimately needed to get out of the commitment due to being in major pain - this really is a TMI kind of thing which would only be discussed among your girlfriends and your doctor. Not with anyone else. If you really end up in a situation like this, then just say you are unwell and there is no need to elaborate.
17 My Parents Grounded Me So I Cannot Even Babysit
I do remember whenever I was grounded as a teenager, I was allowed to go to school and to work at a summer job, but going out to meet friends at the mall was off limits. And, someone had stated on Reddit who answered a question about a silly excuse that anyone had given to get out of babysitting commitments said that her parents grounded her so she could not go and babysit.
Is there a chance that this was really not an excuse and this was true? Sure, anything is possible. However, any parent would know that watching small kids is not anything that anyone would choose to do at their leisure. That alone is why this excuse is just an excuse and not the truth. It is not believable.
16 Assigned A Sudden, Huge Assignment
High school teachers and even many elementary school teachers are known to give their students a lot of homework. However, what are the odds that any teacher would dump a student with a huge assignment on the same night that you were planning to babysit? And, even if the student was given the huge assignment on a Friday, and the plans were made on a weekend, they could still spare a few hours to honor their babysitting commitments.
However, on Yahoo! Answers, when someone had asked about excuses that people used to get out of babysitting commitments, this was mentioned not just by one individual but by several. Is it a coincidence that anyone would be bogged down with sudden homework on the same night they had agreed to babysit?
15 A Sudden Stomach Bug
It is common to use the excuse that you are sick to get out of babysitting commitments, just like one already did by saying they had the swine flu. And, telling the parents of the kids you were planning to babysit that you can't because you all of a sudden started losing your lunch is not unheard of. And, these parents would immediately believe the babysitter because why would they take a chance on wanting to have their kids being around those kinds of sick germs?
However, when someone had gone on Yahoo! Answers to ask people about the funniest excuses they had given to get out of their babysitting jobs, someone had answered they told the parents that they came down with a stomach bug. And, what made this particularly amusing was that this person had also added that after she got off the phone with the parents canceling her babysitting plans, she had ordered a pizza. And, if you have a stomach bug, the last thing you are going to want to do is to eat pizza!
14 Forgot About A Family Member’s Birthday
Anyone can forget a family member's birthday and that is usually because of being so incredibly busy or stressed that anyone can become forgetful. However, someone had asked a question on Reddit about brilliant ideas for excuses to use to get out of babysitting commitments. And, one answer was that they had forgotten it was a family member's birthday, and they had to cancel their babysitting plans to spend time with their beloved family member.
As I just said, forgetting a family member's birthday can happen, but what are the odds of it happening on the same day that you had agreed to babysit?
13 Committed To An Organized Study Night
Students that are preparing for exams need to square away time beforehand to study, and because that they will need to be fully committed to studying, they would not make any plans that could distract them. That would include babysitting. You would think anyway.
However, when someone had gone on Yahoo! Answers to ask the question to anyone who would answer about the craziest excuses that they had given to get out of babysitting- someone had said that they got out of it because they were committed to an organized study night. Is there a chance this actually could be a valid reason to not stick to your babysitting commitments? Sure, but the odds are no.
12 Family Is Having A Reunion At Dinner
What are the chances of you having a family dinner reunion the same night that you had agreed to babysit for someone? I'd say quite slim but someone did use this reason as an excuse to get out of their babysitting commitment. Someone had answered a question on Reddit about the excuses that they had given to back out of their babysitting commitments in the past.
This excuse sounds less believable than some of the others that have been listed already because it is just not possible to plan a family reunion dinner in one day - especially on the same day that you had agreed to babysit for someone. That is because it is just what it sounds like, an excuse.
11 Cousin Is Having A Baby Shower And Needs Help With Planning
If you are going to have to help your cousin that is expecting plan the baby shower, then what are the odds of it having to happen on that exact day that you were planning to babysit? When someone on Reddit had asked the general question about the excuses people had given to get out of babysitting commitments, this was one of the answers.
Someone had said that they told the parents of the kids that they were planning to babysit that they could not honor their commitment because their cousin needed their help for planning her baby shower. Because her cousin did not need their help on any other day except for that one. Right!
10 Gotta Go Back To School For Extra Credit
The excuse that many people have given in order to get out of babysitting commitments seem to have to do with their education, and this particular excuse is about that one as well. The individual had told someone on Yahoo! Answers who had wondered about the excuses that people used to get out of babysitting that they told the parents that they could not babysit because they needed to take an extra school credit.
When you must go back to school to take an extra credit, then you don't earn that credit in one evening. Not to mention, when you want to take a course to earn extra credit, you don't decide upon that on a whim. Certainly not on the same evening that you had committed to babysitting someone's kids.
9 Anger Management Course Is That Day
Some of us have a hard time handling strong emotions, and this is why there are anger management classes. And, someone on Reddit stated on a thread about using the best excuses to get out of babysitting that they canceled their babysitting plans by telling the parents of the kids that they were going to watch that they could not do the job that night.
They had to go to an anger management class. That excuse is a great one really because if the parents bought this excuse, then they probably were relieved. Who would want someone with an anger issue watching their kids, right?
8 I Have To Go To Court
If you have to go to court, you are going to be given plenty of notice, that is my understanding of it anyway. A court date does not just all of a sudden come up in one evening. However, on Reddit, this was what someone who wanted to get out of babysitting commitments had said. They said that they could not babysit because they were going to court.
As I said, a court date does just spring up on the same day, and most people would know this. I am quite sure that the parents of these kids who were given this excuse by the babysitter knew that it was just that, an excuse. Chances are they were never asked to do the job again.
7 I Have To Have A Lobotomy
If there is a medal that is meant to be given to someone who has the best excuse to get out of a babysitting commitment, then it needed to be given to someone who used the most creative one around. Someone on a Reddit thread that was about the excuses people used to get out of babysitting said that they told the parents of these kids that they were meant to babysit that they had to get out of it because they were getting a lobotomy.
Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't this surgical practice come to an end decades ago? Maybe this excuse was given because this individual really felt a lobotomy was necessary in order to never make a babysitting commitment again.
6 Washed Some Fiberglass Fiber Drapes And The Debris Is Everywhere
You would think that most people would know not to touch fiberglass, whether it is with their bare hands or not. That is unless it is someone who made a babysitting commitment and ended up getting out of it by mishandling their fiberglass. If they did that on the same day that they were planning to babysit, that is even more of a coincidence.
According to a thread on Reddit, someone had stated that they used this excuse to get out of a babysitting commitment. However, maybe it was said in a way that was believable. After all, fiberglass is messy and can hurt you if you handle it without protecting your hands.
5 Too Much Back Pain
Back pain can be far from fun to deal with, and it is a very convenient excuse to use if you want to get out of something. Just like someone on Yahoo! Answers had said that they had told parents of the kids that they were planning to babysit that they had intense back pain in order to get out of it.
This excuse I would not say is overly creative, but it is most definitely a convenient one to use. Was it believable? That is difficult to say because this individual did not elaborate much other than stating that they got out of having to babysit for one night because they told to parents that they had to rest due to back pain.
4 Family Visiting From Out Of Town
Is there a possibility that family from out of town will visit out of nowhere with very little notice? Sure. It has happened in my case. However, what are the odds of it happening to someone who made commitments to babysit for someone? I would say quite likely slim.
However, someone on a Yahoo! Answer thread said that they got out of their babysitting duties by telling the parents of the kids that they planned to watch that they had family from out of town literally coming on that day. The same day that they were planning to babysit. We all can agree that it is a convenient reason to get out of doing the job.
3 Running Errands
Some people do need to run errands, such as going grocery shopping, late in the evening, and that is because they are either working during the day or going to school. That is quite understandable, and that is why using the excuse to run errands in order to get out of babysitting commitments is a believable one.
According to a thread on Yahoo! Answers, someone had stated that they told the parents of the child they were planning to watch they could not help them out because they had to run errands that same night. And it sounded like it could not be delayed either which probably made it even more believable.
2 Babysitting Co-Worker’s New Pet
The individual who said on a thread on Yahoo! Answers that they got out of babysitting by telling the parents of the kids that they were planning to watch that they had to watch a co-worker's pet instead was not a student. It sounded like a young adult who was building their experience, and this individual had even said that they really were not fond of kids. They had even said they used this excuse because they really do like animals a lot better.
Whether the parents of these kids bought the excuse or not isn't relevant. The question is if someone did not care for kids in the first place, why even make a commitment to babysit at all?
1 I Have To Go To The Doctor And Can’t Cancel Because I Will Get Charged
The fact of the matter is, if you do make a doctor's appointment, you may get charged for canceling it, but not all doctors will do that either. Someone on a Reddit thread said that the excuse they used to get out of their babysitting commitments was that they needed to go to the doctor and could not cancel the appointment because they did not want to pay a cancellation fee.
However, the one thing that does not add up with this excuse is why would anyone agree to babysit on the same day or night that they had set up an appointment with the doctor - at the same time!? With that said, there is a good chance that the parents of the kids did not buy this excuse at all.
