This mom explains why some baby poop actually smells pretty good, and that you are not alone/going crazy if you think so.
One of the most daunting prospects, when you're about to become a first-time parent, is having to change your baby's diapers. For most, it is something they have never had to do before. Once your baby has been around for a few weeks and you've already changed countless diapers, it will become second nature. However, the smell can still be overwhelming from time to time. There's simply no getting around it.
Some of you might well be reading this right now thinking "my baby's poop smelled great and I'm too afraid to say anything." If that sounds like you then you can rest easy as you are not alone. A mom recently told her own story via Scary Mommy detailing how her third child's poop smelled so good that it made her crave baked goods.
"I’d open the door to his room and it smelled like a bakery up in there," she revealed. At first, the mom was afraid to tell anyone about her seemingly strange sense of smell. That was until her son asked if she was baking cookies while changing her brother's dirty diaper, and then her husband asked why his poop smelled like pancakes. Finally, confirmation that she was not going insane.
Upon discovering that she was indeed not alone, the mom did a little digging. Turns out there is actually a science to why baby poop actually has quite a pleasing aroma some of the time. If you breastfeed your baby, then it is likely that baby's poop will smell relatively sweet and not too unpleasant at all. Once you make the move to solid food or if you use formula, changing diapers will be a much more unpleasant experience.
There you have it. If changing your baby's diaper has left you feeling weird because you've craved a cupcake or some popcorn right after, fear not as you are not some sort of sicko. It's down to your baby having sweet smelling poop thanks to a diet of nothing but breast milk. Make the most of it though, as those days will not last.
