25-year-old Lauren Reece Flay suffered a miscarriage after getting mugged as she was commuting to work. Even though she has returned to her job, the young mother is still shaken by the incident, and she is still terrified to step off the train at night. Unfortunately, her son lost a sibling, but thankfully, he still has his mom.

On September 13th, Flay was on the 8:48 p.m. train bound for Sheffield. Throughout her journey, there was a man in his early twenties acting strange around her. He was walking up and down the aisle, and he eventually sat with Flay and just stared at her. He was on the phone with a friend, and it seemed like he was going to get off at Sheffield. However, when it came to Flay’s stop (Hessle), he got up to get off as well.

Flay nervously stepped off the train, and the man was not far behind her. She expected him to pass her because she wasn’t walking that quickly. Instead, he came up to her, punched her chest, kicked her legs, and threw her on the ground. He took her phone and the small amount of cash she had on her, and he ran away.

Flay suffered two fractured ribs and intense bruising on her chest from the incident. Worse news, however, came when she suffered from a miscarriage the next day. She just found out the week prior that she was pregnant, so the loss sent her on a rollercoaster of emotions. Looking on the bright side, Flay is glad she made it through so that she can come home to her 11-month-old son. He may have lost his sibling, but his mom came back to him safe and sound.

Walking home alone at night is dangerous no matter who you are. However, pregnant women are a much easier target for muggers or assaulters on the street. They move slower than most people, and they probably don’t have as much strength to fight back. As a result, it is easier to take advantage of them. However, there is little to no reason for defending someone who would willingly choose to attack a woman carrying a child.3
